Ok i've downloaded Knoppix some 2 or 3 times thinking that the file was corrupted when it didn't work after i burnt it onto the cd and ran it at startup (which was stupid as the Knoppix file was none other than huge)
I check everything, that the computer booted from cd first and so on
But it still didn't work
All i have on the CD is the .iso file for Knoppix
Any suggestions or ideas? They will all be appreciated

you have to open the iso file with your burning download and the software will burn the files on.

You Nero or 50% Alcohol

I've already burnt it onto the CD
I use Nero, although i have also tried 150% Alchohol

Open Nero, go to Recorder / select burn image / browse to the Knoppix .iso file. Then follow the prompts, I cannot help you with the rest as I do not have .iso file on hand.

well....what appears when you start from the cd. is there any error message?

Umm no error message
There is a slight pause but nothing comes up
I can hear the CD running but the computer just ignores it and then just continues booting up windows from the hard drive

You might want to set the BIOS to have pc start from the cd rom first rather than the hard drive. If the cd were bootable yet corrupted, the system would freeze or restart.

I've checked the BIOS and it always runs from a cd first if there is one

UPDATE: Ok now it is finally working, i verified the ISO image and then set it to boot
But now all it says is system information and all that, i thought that Knoppix would load now but it just seems to freeze there ... any ideas or suggestions ?

Just to make sure, when you are in the / directory of the knoppix CD what files do you see? If all you see is a knoppix.iso file you didn't burn the CD correctly. Also what version of knoppix are you downloading, it's the newest version correct? If you have done everything correctly, then I would think you have some kind of unsupported hardware. Perhaps if you list your knoppix version and your hardware, I can look to see if you have unsupported hardware. Also does any other bootable CD boot successfully on your system?

The only file that i burnt onto the CD was the iso file for Knoppix version 3.8
I haven't boot many CDs from my system so i am not sure whether my computer has compatibility issues with the system booting from a CD ...

Sounds like you didn't burn the CD correctly then. Heres an example of how you should burn ISO images to CD.

I think i will just give up
I really want to try Linux though :(

Yeah, but only a level of extra security you don't need :P I'd rather have enough security and more functionality, than more than enough security at the expense of functionality.

Security you don't need? Right, "I want my data manipulated, and my privacy stolen!" Linux has just as much "functionality" as windows does...the command line. GUI's that run on *nix have come far as well, just look at KDE or Gnome.

I don't know anybody to whom that has happened :P The Security Windows has given everybody I know has kept them away from any kind of problems, until of course they become stupid and download things they shouldn't.

Well LK that is your opinion
For me, i see it differently
I absolutely agree with x0r515t
The main reason that i want to try Knoppix is to see what the Linux OS is like, you can not just tell me whether it is bad or not, we have different views and perspectives ...

http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/knoppix-std/
download from here then when you use nero use the cd burning rom wizard and drag the iso over to be burned... This one works i know because i recently downloaded and used it.

This is of course if you didn't get it working... i couldn't tell because of LK babbling about the GREAT WINDOWS :D

Haha, yeah. You should try it - if only to see how it was not worth it :D

You should tell us how you get on with it!

sorry for the late post but you download the file that is the largest... 450-500 mb if i remember... remember when downloading things like this that it is a cd image SO it is going to have an .iso extension and a lrge file size.
